What is Mini LED technology?

Mini led is not what we usually call LED, to understand what is LED, you can check this article: LED VS. LCD

Mini LED technology can be regarded as an upgraded version of the traditional LCD screen, which can effectively improve the contrast and enhance the expressiveness of the picture. Unlike OLED self-illuminating screens, Mini LED technology requires LED backlight as a support to display images.

Both traditional LCD and mini LED need to be equipped with LED backlight, but TFT LCD screen backlight often only supports uniform adjustment, and cannot individually adjust the brightness and darkness of a certain area. However, the Mini LED technology can make the LED backlight beads very small (the size of the backlight beads of the Mini LED display technology is about 50 microns to 200 microns, which is much smaller than the traditional LED backlight beads), thus dividing them into different backlights area. The more backlight partitions, the more backlights area can be adjustments, and the screen will show more detailed pictures and better effects. This is also an important difference between Mini LED technology and traditional LCD screens.

About LCD-More knowledge you need to know

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. LCDs work by utilizing the properties of liquid crystals, which are a state of matter that exhibit properties of both liquids and solids. The display consists of several layers, including a backlight source, color filters, liquid crystal cells, and electrodes.

The basic principle behind LCD operation involves manipulating the light passing through liquid crystal cells. When an electric current is applied to the liquid crystal cells, the crystals align in specific orientations, allowing or blocking the passage of light. This manipulation of light results in the formation of images on the screen.

We have introduced various knowledge of LCD in detail in many articles, you can check them at any time.

Mini LED: Pushing the Boundaries of Backlighting

Mini LED technology represents a notable evolution in backlighting for display panels. It incorporates an array of miniature LEDs as the backlight source, enabling finer local dimming zones and superior contrast ratios compared to traditional LCD panels. Mini LED displays can deliver improved HDR (High Dynamic Range) performance, deeper blacks, and brighter highlights, resulting in a more immersive viewing experience.

The key advantage of Mini LED lies in its ability to offer precise local dimming. With thousands of individually controlled LEDs, backlighting zones can be dynamically dimmed or brightened to match the content being displayed. This leads to enhanced contrast, reduced blooming, and improved color accuracy, especially in high-contrast scenes.

Another benefit of Mini LED is its potential for higher peak brightness levels. By packing more LEDs into a display, it becomes possible to achieve significantly brighter images, enabling better visibility in well-lit environments or during HDR playback. This feature makes Mini LED displays ideal for applications where brightness and image quality are of paramount importance.

However, Mini LED technology does have a few limitations. One of the main challenges is the cost associated with manufacturing these displays, as the process of integrating a large number of miniaturized LEDs can be complex and expensive. Additionally, the size and power requirements of the Mini LED arrays may pose design constraints, particularly for portable devices like smartphones and tablets.

TFT LCD: The Reliable Workhorse

Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display (TFT LCD) has been a staple in the display industry for many years and continues to dominate the market due to its reliability and affordability. TFT LCD panels use a layer of thin-film transistors to control the amount of light passing through liquid crystal cells, resulting in the formation of images on the screen.

TFT LCDs offer several advantages that have contributed to their widespread adoption. Firstly, they provide excellent color reproduction and wide viewing angles, making them suitable for a range of applications, from small industrial screen to large-screen televisions. Additionally, TFT LCD panels can achieve high resolutions, enabling crisp and detailed visuals.

Furthermore, TFT LCD technology is cost-effective, as it has matured over time and benefits from economies of scale. The manufacturing processes for TFT LCD panels have been optimized, leading to more affordable displays for consumers. This affordability has made TFT LCD the go-to choice for many device manufacturers, particularly for budget-friendly devices.

However, TFT LCD does have some limitations when compared to Mini LED. One of the key drawbacks is the inability to achieve true blacks due to the backlighting system. Since the backlight is always on, even when displaying black content, there is some level of light leakage that affects contrast ratios. Additionally, TFT LCD displays may experience motion blur, especially in fast-paced scenes, which can be a concern for gamers and sports enthusiasts.

Application of MIni LED and TFT LCD

At present, mini led is mainly used in high-end electronic product markets such as TVs, mobile phones, computers, game monitors, and AR VR virtual reality. Due to the high cost of mini led, some low-end products have not yet become mainstream.
TFT LCD should be used in all walks of life, from small-sized smart home control panels to large-sized TVs, whether in the computer field or in the industrial field, car speed screens or smart computer screens, advertising signs and home theaters, etc., TFT The application field of LCD is very extensive.
