A luminance value alone does not show whether a screen remains readable in direct sun. Reflections, viewing angle, contrast, cover glass and temperature all affect the result.

For an embedded TFT LCD, start with a luminance target at the finished viewing surface, then validate representative content under defined ambient-light and thermal conditions. This approach makes the requirement testable and helps suppliers compare complete assemblies rather than isolated panel numbers.

Brightness and illuminance describe different things

Display luminance describes light traveling from a surface toward an observer in a given direction. It is expressed in candelas per square meter (cd/m²); one nit is one cd/m². A luminance specification should identify the image pattern, measurement location and direction, display setting, temperature and operating state.

Ambient illuminance, measured in lux, describes light arriving at a surface. A display luminance value in nits cannot be directly converted into outdoor illuminance in lux. The effect of that ambient light depends on how the display assembly reflects it and where the light source and viewer are positioned.[1]

For example, two screens can receive the same illuminance while showing different glare because their surface treatments or angles differ. Equally, the same screen can look different in diffuse daylight and under a direct reflection of the sun.

Measure the complete viewing surface

Conceptual assembly; exact construction varies by product.

A panel datasheet may state luminance at the LCD module. The finished product can add a touch sensor, adhesive, protective film, cover glass or enclosure window. These layers can change both transmitted light and reflections. Specify whether a value applies to the bare module or to the outside of the final assembly, and use the latter when it represents what the operator sees.

Record the test pattern and backlight setting. A full-white measurement, a small white area and a real user-interface screen can produce different results, particularly when a system changes brightness with content or temperature. Define whether the requirement is a typical value, a minimum acceptance value or a measured value for a particular sample. Those terms are not interchangeable.

Why ambient contrast matters

A dark-room contrast ratio compares light and dark display states under controlled low-ambient conditions. Outdoors, ambient light reflected toward the viewer can raise the apparent luminance of dark regions and reduce the separation between text and its background. NASA’s display guidance notes that reflection can affect luminance, contrast and color under ambient illumination.[2]

For a defined test geometry, an ambient contrast ratio can be described as the measured luminance of a light state divided by the measured luminance of a dark state, both under the stated illumination. The measurement must specify the light source, angles, patterns and instrument position. A single reflectance percentage cannot predict all glare conditions.

A simple illustration of reflected light

Suppose, only for illustration, that a display contributes 800 cd/m² in its white state and 1 cd/m² in its black state, and that reflected ambient light adds the same 100 cd/m² to both measurements. The resulting ratio is approximately 900 ÷ 101, or 8.9:1, rather than the dark-condition ratio of 800:1.

This is a simplified teaching example, not a prediction for a real module. Real reflections can change with the image area, surface, illumination direction and viewing angle. Specular glare can obscure a local region even when a single average contrast number looks acceptable.

Specify the environment and the user’s task

Conceptual viewing scene; not a reported test or measurement.

Describe whether the display is used indoors near a window, outdoors in shade, or in direct sunlight. Define the expected orientation of the screen, the range of viewing angles and the positions where a bright source may reflect toward the user. Include the enclosure, visor or mounting angle if it changes the light reaching the display.

Then define the visual task. Reading small black text, recognizing a warning icon and viewing a photograph place different demands on the interface. Test representative text sizes, colors, alarms and graphics at the actual viewing distance. A generic claim such as “sunlight readable” is incomplete unless the content and viewing conditions are defined.

Reduce reflections before relying only on a brighter backlight

Anti-reflection (AR) treatments aim to reduce reflected light at the relevant surfaces. Anti-glare (AG) surfaces scatter reflections, which can reduce a sharp reflected image but may introduce haze or affect perceived sharpness. The outcome depends on the treatment and the complete optical stack.

Optical bonding can replace an air gap with an optical adhesive and reduce reflections at selected internal interfaces when the materials and construction are appropriate. It does not automatically eliminate the reflection from the outer surface. Review the proposed stack, touch requirements, rework constraints and optical results with the supplier.

The choice is a trade-off. A brighter backlight, lower-reflection stack, cover-glass treatment and mechanical shade can all affect visibility, power, heat, touch behavior, appearance and cost. Compare finished samples in the intended environment.

Specify sustained brightness and thermal conditions

Conceptual test setting; no test result is claimed.

Maximum luminance measured briefly at room temperature may not represent sustained output in a sealed outdoor enclosure. Backlight power produces heat, and a system may reduce output to stay within its thermal limits. Ambient temperature, solar heating, enclosure ventilation and duty cycle should therefore be part of the requirement.

Define the required operating mode, stabilization or soak period, ambient and relevant enclosure conditions, and the minimum luminance or readability result after stabilization. The panel’s operating-temperature range alone does not establish the luminance it can sustain in the final product. Verify the complete assembly.

Build an actionable specification

Requirement

What to record

Luminance

Minimum or typical value; measured surface, viewing direction, pattern, brightness setting and temperature.

Ambient condition

Illuminance at the display plane, source type, incidence angle, diffuse and direct components where relevant.

Readability

Representative content, viewing distance and angles, acceptance method and any contrast target under the defined geometry.

Optical assembly

Panel revision, touch layer, cover glass, coatings, bonding and protective films.

Thermal operation

Ambient and enclosure conditions, run time, brightness-control mode and stabilized result.

Power and integration

Backlight driver, current and dimming requirements, supply limits, touch and host interface.

Set numerical targets from the product’s use case and validation plan. There is no single nit threshold that proves every display readable in every outdoor condition. NIST’s daylight readability research treats display and reflection measurements together with the lighting environment, illustrating why the test setup matters.[1]

Validate a sample in the final configuration

Assemble the intended LCD, touch layer, cover, enclosure and any optical treatment.

Record the display settings and measure luminance at the agreed point and viewing direction.

Apply the specified ambient lighting and repeat the light- and dark-state measurements using the agreed geometry.

Inspect representative interface content at the required distances and viewing angles, including direct-reflection positions.

Repeat after the stated operating period and thermal conditions; record any brightness limiting.

Document the exact panel, optical stack, driver and enclosure revisions used for the result.

A laboratory measurement improves repeatability; a field assessment can expose reflections and use conditions that the laboratory setup misses. Neither result should be generalized to a different cover glass or display revision without review.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher-nit display always easier to read outdoors?

No. Greater luminance can help, but reflections, contrast, viewing geometry, content and sustained thermal performance also affect readability.

Are nits and lux interchangeable?

No. Nits describe luminance from a surface in a direction; lux describes illuminance arriving at a surface.

Does optical bonding eliminate all glare?

No. It can reduce reflections at selected internal interfaces, but outer-surface reflections and other sources of glare can remain.

Can a dark-room contrast ratio prove sunlight readability?

No. Ambient reflections can reduce contrast under the conditions of use.
